VodafoneZiggo has announced the launch of gigabit broadband speeds to 600,000 households and businesses in Amsterdam. It follows similar announcements in Utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam, and takes the number of gigabit connections in The Netherlands to more than 1.5 million.

With more rollouts scheduled in Almere, Apeldoorn, Arnhem, Groningen, Heerenveen, Leeuwarden, Lelystad, Nijmegen and Wageningen in the next few weeks, gigabit speeds will be available to around 3 million Dutch households and businesses by the end of 2020.

'The rollout of super-fast internet in The Netherlands is entirely in line with VodafoneZiggo's ambition to prepare The Netherlands for the digital future,' said Jeroen Hoencamp, CEO of VodafoneZiggo.

'Under the name GigaNet, the powerful network of Vodafone and Ziggo, we annually invest hundreds of millions in a stable, innovative and secure network. 'Gigabit without digging' is a key part of this. Thanks to all these investments to make our network 1 gigabit-suitable, it's not only customers who opt for the highest internet speed that benefit. All connected customers also automatically benefit from a faster and more stable network connection without having to do anything.'

The rollout of Liberty Global's next generation broadband network is accelerating throughout Europe, with Amsterdam becoming the 33rd city within its footprint to offer gigabit speeds. These are now commercially available to more than 15 million homes and businesses across Europe and will enable customers to download a High Definition film in just 48 seconds, compared with 16 minutes with a 50 Mbps connection, and use multiple streaming devices at the same time. It also opens up a world of possibilities, including cloud-based gaming, 8K streaming, remote health monitoring and advanced telepresence, which could enable consumers to go 'virtual reality shopping' or watch live broadcasts of holographic sports events.
