FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) - After a power failure lasting several hours on Tuesday night, vacation travel at Frankfurt Airport may still be subject to delays and flight cancellations during the course of the day. Flights operated by Discover Airlines and Lufthansa, among others, could be affected, said a spokesman for airport operator Fraport. He advised travelers to check their flights in advance.

According to current information, a transformer failure in a transformer station caused the power outage. The incident occurred at around 11 p.m., at the beginning of the night flight ban. The emergency power supply, which supplies all safety-relevant systems, was activated, said the spokesperson. Safety at Germany's largest airport was not endangered at any time.

Area A and partly also B in Terminal 1 of the airport were affected by the power failure. This sector is mainly used by Lufthansa. The power supply was restored at around 3.30 a.m. and therefore before the resumption of regular flight operations at 5.00 a.m.

At Lufthansa, there could still be failures at the check-in machines, which meant that some baggage had to be cleared manually, said the spokesperson. With around 189,000 passengers expected and 1242 flight movements, Tuesday was not a day when the airport would be under peak load, but disruptions were of course unfavorable, especially for air travelers in the morning and during the vacation season./csc/ceb/DP/jha
