DÜSSELDORF (dpa-AFX) - An unexploded bomb from World War II has been discovered near Düsseldorf Airport. The bomb was found during construction work in Düsseldorf-Lohausen, the city administration reported Thursday. It is an American ten-ton aerial bomb. Details of the planned defusing and the necessary measures will communicate the city administration shortly. Currently, the crisis team is meeting, said a city spokesman.
The unexploded bomb had a conventional impact fuse, the airport said. The explosive ordnance disposal service of the Düsseldorf district government plans to defuse the device in the afternoon.
Traffic disruptions are to be expected. The federal highway 8 and the adjacent railroad line of the U79 would have to be closed in the afternoon in the area of the airport. Passengers should take this into account when traveling to the airport and allow extra time accordingly.
In view of the air traffic, a low-traffic period with few flights in the afternoon should be used for the defusing. If this succeeds, the impact on air traffic would remain low. For the defusing time window, people in a radius of 500 meters would have to be evacuated./fc/DP/stw
