Macy's has hired a consulting firm to assess splitting off its e-commerce channel from its physical store business.

The news comes at a time retailers are still struggling to regain in-store traffic following the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020.

The move to evaluate separating its business is being spurred by an activist investor, Jana Partners LLC, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Competitor Saks Fifth Avenue announced it was spinning off its e-commerce operation earlier in the year.

Macy's has hired AlixPartners to do the scenario assessment.
