The Federal Ministry of the Interior has opted for MAN vehicles in placing an order for new all-terrain vehicles for its civil protection vehicle fleet. The use of MAN all-wheel drive trucks in civil protection goes back many years. Now 164 MAN TGM special-purpose trucks for decontaminating people and 119 MAN TGM hose-reel vehicles have been ordered of the latest generation of vehicles that meet exhaust emission standard Euro 6. The first vehicles have already been handed over to the civil protection team in Bonn. The civil protection vehicles are used on a day-to-day basis by fire brigades throughout Germany and are painted in the customary fire-brigade red.

The 164 emergency services vehicles are based on the MAN TGM 18.340 4x4 with crew cab and are fitted out with bodywork from Freytag for transporting decontamination equipment. These "Decon P" vehicles are used in cases of accidents which involve nuclear, biological or chemical hazards or hazardous materials. An on-site station can be rapidly set up, complete with tents and shower cubicles, for decontaminating people who have come into contact with hazardous substances and/or materials. The vehicles thus have electricity generators, tent heaters, lighting units, instantaneous water heaters, drinking water tanks and waste water tanks on board.

The "Decon P" vehicles can also be driven through water depths of up to 80 cm in order to reach the emergency site. They are equipped with selectable all-wheel drive and an automatic MAN TipMatic gearbox. This allows the driver to concentrate on simply driving the vehicle and getting to the emergency quickly.

The MAN TGM 13.250 4x4 with selectable all-wheel drive was chosen for the 119 hose-reel vehicles. These vehicles will be utilised, for example, in cases of major fires where long hose lines need to be laid or where large volumes of water need to be pumped away after storms or floods. The driver can select a special programme in the MAN TipMatic in cases of emergency which activates rapid acceleration and special downshift.
