Rome, Jul 8 (EFE).- Jose Mourinho said he is a victim of his own success as he was unveiled as AS Roma's new manager on Thursday.

The Portuguese coach agreed to join the Serie A team on a three-year contract after he was sacked by Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in March following an underwhelming spell that ended trophy-less and with the team outside of the European places.

He was also sacked by Manchester United in 2018 after an acrimonious time in charge with the team 11 points off the top 4.

"I won three trophies at Manchester United and that was seen as a disaster. I reached a cup final which I was not allowed to play at Tottenham, which was seen as a disaster," Mourinho said during his presentation.

"I am a victim of what I have achieved, of the way people see me. What is considered a disaster for me is considered a great success for others."

He insisted that he had matured emotionally and would be less hostile to the media than his previous spell in Serie A, when he managed Internazionale from 2008-2010, leading the Nerazzurri to victory in two Serie A championships, a Coppa Italia and the 2010 Champions League but endured a difficult relationship with the Italian press.

"I am the Roma coach, I don't want to be anything else. There's a lot to do here, I'll be covering this role for 24 hours, except a few hours I need to sleep and rest," he said.

"I will give everything to defend my players, but I won't be the one looking for trouble, I don't have time for (arguing with the media)." EFE
