To the dismay of the fans, the Messi vs. Ronaldo most-awaited matchup will not be happening anytime soon after the controversies surrounding the initial draw of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 forced the European governing body to void the original results and conduct a re-draw three hours later.

The issue stemmed from a rare mistake involving an error in pairing line up and the exclusion of Manchester United as an option to be drawn against Atletico Madrid, all of which are caught after the fixtures have been drawn.

In a statement released by UEFA, they said, "Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16."

As such, in the aftermath of the re-draw, Lionel Messi-led team Paris Saint Germain ended up going against Real Madrid to kick off the league's round of 16, January next year. See below the results of the second draw, which stands as the final one.

UCL Round of 16 fixtures:

* PSG vs Real Madrid

* Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid

* Inter Milan vs Liverpool

* Villareal vs Juventus

* Chelsea vs Lille

* Benfica vs Ajax

* Sporting CP vs Manchester City

* RB Salzburg vs Bayern Munich

There's still no exact date on the next rounds of fixtures but rain or shine, the games will proceed at the start of the new year. Follow UEFA Champions League's official website and social media accounts to stay updated on the latest news.
