India's automobile sector is showing some signs of a revival, as the easing of coronavirus-related restrictions boosted sales of cars, utility vehicles and motorcycles in August.

Sales of passenger vehicles rose 14.2% from a year earlier to 215,916 units last month, while two-wheeler sales rose 3% to 1.56 million units, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said Friday.

The growth in these segments indicates "trends of recovery for the industry, though it is on the backdrop of pent-up demand," said Kenichi Ayukawa, president of SIAM.

Total vehicle production fell 3.1% in August to 2.15 million units. For the April-August period, it dropped 54.2% to 5.34 million units.

The "industry is positive that the coming festive season will pave the way for a faster revival," said Rajesh Menon, SIAM's director general.
