In future, medicines for selected pharmacies in the Triangle area of Denmark will be transported by electric vans.

Novo Nordisk and pharmaceutical wholesaler and distributor, TMJ (part of the McKesson family), have collaborated on a pilot project to understand the practicalities of distributing medicines in a more environmentally friendly way.

TMJ will, in collaboration with Novo Nordisk, start delivering medicines to pharmacies using electric vans. Both companies have, as part of their environmental strategies, set themselves the ambitious goal of become CO2-neutral by 2030.

'If the goals are to be met, it will require a massive investment in green and environmentally friendly initiatives. The pilot project is an important step in this direction,' says Kasper Bødker Mejlvang, country manager in Novo Nordisk Danmark.

'At Novo Nordisk, we work purposefully to introduce solutions that will reduce our climate footprint. This applies everywhere in our production and supply chain, from laboratories and offices to production facilities and transport. Therefore, it is also a natural step for us to try whether we can deliver our medicines to pharmacies in a greener way than we do today.'

Pharmacies in Vejle and Kolding will be the first to receive environmentally friendly medicine deliveries.

Every year, both companies transport millions of goods around Danish roads in diesel trucks and vans. At present, vehicles emit large amounts of particles and CO2 that pollute the air. That is why both Novo Nordisk and TMJ are investigating, with this pilot project, the opportunity to reorient their transportation to more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

Initially, the goal is to deliver medicine to pharmacies in Vejle and Kolding using electric vans.

TMJ looks forward to reducing CO2 emissions from deliveries:

'As a pharmaceutical wholesaler and distributor, we have an impact on the environment when we make daily deliveries of medicines and medical equipment. It is therefore important that we investigate whether it can be done in a more environmentally friendly way - and this pilot project is an important step along the way.

'Over the coming years, we will continue to reduce our CO2 emissions, as well as contribute to green collaboration across sectors with care for future generations,' says Marianne Timm, Adm. Director, TMJ.

The first environmentally friendly deliveries are expected to take place during the late summer of 2021.

If the pilot proves successful, the plan is to expand the distribution and roll out electric medicines transportation to several other areas in Denmark.
