Meliá Hotels International remains committed to reducing emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change, as shown by the 'A-' rating the company has once again achieved in the annual ranking prepared by the international Carbon Disclosure Project organization.

Meliá Hotels International has once again been cited as a company that is 'leading change' and an example of best practices, thanks to the priority given to mitigating the effects of climate change in its strategic plan. Among the aspects that demonstrate the company's commitment are the use of 100% renewable energy in all its facilities in Spain and Italy, as well as investments in the modernization of its services and facilities to continue to reduce Co2 emissions while at the same time guaranteeing quality and efficient service for customers.

The company recently announced that its internal energy efficiency and emissions measurement programme (SAVE) has allowed it to reduce CO2 emissions per customer by 12% and water use by 7% in the first half of the year. Meliá also promotes the use of renewable energy and the most energy-efficient systems, and has installed more 22,500 LEDs and 3,500 new electronic devices in 2017. This has achieved a 12% reduction in electricity use per stay and a 32% reduction in diesel consumption per stay thanks to cooperation in 11 projects with suppliers and energy services companies. After its public commitment to the COP21 Paris Agreements, Meliá has also joined the Climate Change Cluster, coordinated by Forética, which brings together 50 of the most important Spanish companies.

As Gabriel Escarrer says, 'the leading companies in each industry have to set an example in environmental issues, and in the hotel industry we have a special responsibility. As well as being large consumers of energy, we also have an important opportunity to raise awareness among the millions of guests we receive every year. That is why we are particularly pleased with this announcement, and why we are encouraged to continue to move forward in the fight against climate change, some of whose most terrible effects we have already suffered this year in the Caribbean.'
