MUNICH (dpa-AFX) - The ADAC expects an increase in e-car registrations for the current year, as the pressure on manufacturers is increasing due to reduced CO2 fleet limits. Car buyers could probably benefit from this in the form of higher discounts, the Verkehrsclub announced.

The electric car boom in Germany came to an abrupt halt last year. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), only around 380,600 new pure electric cars were registered in 2024. This was more than a quarter less than in the previous year. The share of all new registrations fell by almost five percentage points to 13.5 percent.

To increase the attractiveness of e-mobility, the ADAC emphasized that cheaper models as well as affordable and transparent charging prices are crucial.

The ADAC welcomes the fact that some manufacturers have announced new entry-level models costing less than €25,000 this year. "The range of models is growing, and the expansion of the charging infrastructure is also progressing," said Stefan Gerwens, head of traffic at ADAC. For example, the number of charging points increased by over 20 percent in 2024, and by almost 40 percent for fast chargers. "However, we still see major differences and uncertainties in prices."

In the opinion of the ADAC, the outcome of the federal election at the end of February is also likely to be crucial. "A reliable political framework is essential for the ramp-up of e-mobility," says Gerwens. In the face of continuing uncertainties, private buyers are either postponing their purchase decision or switching to combustion engines./hgo/DP/zb
