According to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence, mostly by an intimate partner. Violence not only negatively impacts women on a personal level, but also results in greater healthcare and productivity costs.*

The Meta Government, Politics and Nonprofit team works with a number of organizations dedicated to preventing and ending gender-based violence. Because the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has led to an increase in gender-based violence against women, we've responded by helping government and nonprofit organizations use Meta technologies to effectively tackle the rise of gender-based violence in their communities.

We have provided organizations with tools, resources, training, creative and campaign optimization support from Meta Business Partners to help amplify their messaging to keep women safe, informed, and empowered against gender-based violence.

This support has resulted in new awareness campaigns about legal rights and safety options, as well as interactive chatbots for those seeking help.

For example, Soul City Institute for Social Justice, an intersectional feminist nonprofit organization in South Africa, used Facebook and Instagram to raise awareness about providing a safe space for women facing gender-based violence. The ad campaign, which featured vibrant, static imagery clearly drawing attention to the organization's cause, reached over 1.8M people.

If you are a government or nonprofit organization helping to end gender-based violence, we recommend the following best practices on Meta technologies to spread awareness and engage with your communities: :

  • Increase your daily posting frequency on Facebook and Instagram to help increase visibility of your announcements
  • Share helplines in your Page's "About" section and tell survivors how they can reach your staff when they need help
  • Repackage your content into a variety of different post types such as text-only, photos, videos, links, and Live video to connect with and engage audiences in different ways
  • Pin important announcements like FAQs or emergency contact information to the top of your Facebook Page for ease of viewing
  • Consider ads to help amplify your message and reach more of your community with important safety information
  • Speak your audience's languageby running ads in multiple languages to help increase awareness amongst different groups of people in your community
  • Track your impact by measuring performance in Ads Manager - you can view how many people you've reached in a certain region, how many email addresses you've collected and at what cost, how many people of a certain age visited your website and much more

Gender-based violence is an issue that affects all of us and Meta is proud to support the organizations working tirelessly to combat it around the world.
