METRO CAMPUS area: 6 finalists selected in urban design competition, final competition phase begins, winner to be chosen at the end of June
6 designs from the finalists

In cooperation with the City of Düsseldorf, METRO PROPERTIES, the real estate company of METRO AG, initiated a voluntary urban design competition in November 2020. The aim of the two-stage competition is to develop a sustainable urban design concept for the current METRO Campus area. The jury of experts, consisting of renowned architects, urban planning offices and landscape architects, representatives of METRO PROPERTIES, as well as Düsseldorf politicians and the city administration of Düsseldorf, selected 6 finalists for the second, in-depth phase of the competition process. Originally, 5 finalists were scheduled for the second competition phase, but the high quality of the designs prompted the jury to include a further design in the second phase.

In a second, virtual public participation process, the designs will be presented to the public. For 14 days, interested parties are invited to provide input on the 6 models of urban development, which may be taken into account for further planning. The winning design of the urban design competition will be selected at the end of June 2021.

'We were impressed by the positive response from all interest groups and the quality of the submissions for the redevelopment of the METRO Campus area. The designs underline the quality and the urban development potential of the site. At the same time, they show a wide visionary range and how different the focal points can be in the development of an urban, diversified quarter', says Jürgen Schwarze, Chief Financial Officer of METRO PROPERTIES and member of the jury.

The 6 finalists in the second phase of the urban design competition include the following participants:

  • Lorber Paul Architekten, Cologne with Prof. Rolf-Egon Westerheide with club l94 landschaftsarchitekten, Cologne
  • ACME, London with Stadt Land Fluss, Berlin with Kieran Fraser Landscape Design, Vienna
  • caspar.schmitzmorkramer, Cologne with Schellenberg + Bäumler Architekten, Dresden with Studio grüngrau Landschaftsarchitektur, Düsseldorf
  • Architekturwerkstatt Jochen Karl - Freier Architekt und Freier Stadtplaner, Schwanau with Stefan Tischer | Landschaftsarchitekt, Berlin
  • HPP Architekten, Düsseldorf with scheuvens + wachten plus planungsgesellschaft, Dortmund with GREENBOX Landscape Architects Hubertus Schäfer + Markus Pieper, Cologne
  • DBCO, Münster with studio ELE, Cologne with schöne aussichten landschaftsarchitektur, Kassel

'The versatile, diverse and already very well-elaborated designs have exceeded our expectations. The fact that a quarter of the future can be developed here has been made very clear to us in terms of urban design and architecture. In the jury session, we were impressed by the large number of exciting ideas for implementation. As we are planning for the citizens, I would like to invite everyone to take a look at the shortlisted designs and to submit their comments,' says Cornelia Zuschke, Chief Officer for Planning, Construction, Mobility and Real Estate of the state capital Düsseldorf.
Renowned national and international architects and urban planning offices took part in the two-phase urban design competition. The application and competition phase began in December 2020. The 6 finalists were selected by the jury of experts on 13 April 2021. The designs will now be presented to the public in the next step. In the public participation process, all citizens are cordially invited to submit comments and ideas to the 6 finalists for the second design phase.

In this second, in-depth phase, the designs will be further elaborated by the architectural and urban planning offices. The winning design of the competition will be selected by the jury of experts at the end of June 2021. The designs from the urban planning competition will then be publicly exhibited on the METRO Campus.
On this basis, the Management Board of METRO AG will decide how to proceed and take the final decision on whether areas of the current METRO Campus between METRO and Schlüterstraße will be sold. At that time, it will also be decided whether the current METRO store and the head office of METRO Germany will move within Dusseldorf from 2026 at the earliest. METRO AG's head office will remain at the METRO Campus.
