The governor of Japan's Osaka Prefecture said Wednesday that MGM Resorts International and Orix Corp. submitted a plan to spend 1 trillion yen ($9.10 billion) to build a casino resort in Osaka.

The city and prefecture of Osaka will examine the proposal until September and submit an application to the national government by the April 2022 deadline, Hirofumi Yoshimura said at a press conference on Wednesday.

If Osaka is selected as a location for a casino resort, it will likely open in the latter half of the 2020s, Mr. Yoshimura added.
