The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority said Thursday that it has decided to refer Microsoft Corp.'s $75 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc. for a phase 2 investigation after Microsoft informed the regulator that it wouldn't be offering any undertakings.

On Sept. 1, the regulator decided that the merger might result in a substantial lessening of competition in the U.K.

On Jan. 18, Microsoft agreed to buy Activision Blizzard Inc. in an all-cash deal.
