The US government, Friday, handed over 1 million doses of Moderna vaccine through the international Covax initiative, as part of its efforts to support Tunisia against the coronavirus.

The Military Health Directorate in coordination with the Health Ministry will use these doses during the vaccination campaigns across the country, Chief of Staff Nadia Akacha told reporters following the reception of the vaccine doses at the Tunis Carthage Airport.

Akacha extended thanks to the US government for its support of Tunisia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In turn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tunisians Abroad Othman Jerandi underscored that these doses will be used to vaccinate citizens throughout the country through mobile units and hospitals. He urged Tunisians to go to vaccination centres in a bid to curb the pandemic while complying with the health protocols.

The Health Ministry is seeking to jab the largest number of citizens possible, Acting Health Minister Mohamed Trabesli pointed out. Meanwhile, he welcomed the support brought to Tunisia as part of the Covax initiative by various countries.

US Ambassador to Tunisia Donald Bloom said the US will stand by the Tunisian people during this pandemic. Our goal is to help Tunisian citizens get vaccinated as soon as possible, he indicated.
