The Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL) intends to construct a high voltage power line and associated substations to eliminate transmission bottlenecks in Eastern Uganda.

- The project will allow evacuation of power from several planned hydropower plants on the slopes of Mount Elgon in addition to serving the growing electricity demand in the area, explains Jørn Stave, Senior Environmental Specialist at Multiconsult.

The environmental and social impact assessment is required to comply with the licensing requirements of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) in Uganda as well as with international safeguard standards. The study is financed by the German state-owned development bank, KfW, who also intends to support the implementation of the project.

Multiconsult has partnered with the Ugandan consultancy firm Proess Ltd. which will be responsible for most of the field investigations and public consultations. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Multiconsult will restrict international travel to only essential trips for key staff.

The assignment has a duration of one year with key deliverables expected within six months. Multiconsult will also support UETCL with the public disclosure of the environmental and social impact assessment.
