WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) _ National Fuel Gas Co. (NFG) on Thursday reported a fiscal fourth-quarter loss of $145.5 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

The Williamsville, New York-based company said it had a loss of $1.60 per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 40 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 34 cents per share.

The energy company posted revenue of $288 million in the period.

For the year, the company reported a loss of $123.8 million, or $1.41 per share, swinging to a loss in the period. Revenue was reported as $1.55 billion.

National Fuel Gas shares have decreased 13% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $40.40, a drop of 12% in the last 12 months.
