National Grid PLC said Thursday that Paula Rosput Reynolds has been appointed to be its next chairman, succeeding Peter Gershon, who earlier this year said he would be stepping down.

The FTSE-100 power infrastructure company said Ms. Reynolds will join the board on Jan. 1 and will assume the role of chairman after a transitionary period, and no later than the conclusion of the 2021 annual general meeting. Mr. Gershon will remain chairman until that time, the company said.

"Paula has a highly successful track record as a chief executive across the energy and insurance industries and has over 20 years' experience as a nonexecutive director in both the U.K. and U.S. across multiple sectors and businesses," said Mark Williamson, senior independent director of National Grid.
