National Grid is Prepared to Serve Customers for the Winter Heating Season Nov 09, 2020 - 9:30 AM

MELVILLE / BROOKLYN, N.Y. - National Grid is prepared to provide it's 1.9 million customers in New York City and Long Island with sufficient natural gas to heat their homes and businesses on the coldest days this winter.

To ensure continued safe reliable operations of the energy networks the company has undertaken a combination of efforts including implementing aggressive energy efficiency and demand response programs and increasing reliance on portable compressed natural gas (CNG) to meet customers' energy needs.

Actions National Grid is Taking to Meet Peak Demand

  • Energy Efficiency - launched enhanced high-efficiency equipment incentives and incentives for bundled gas efficiency measures including thermostat, shower head, aerators.
  • Demand Response Program - an incentive to encourage large customers to reduce natural gas usage during peak periods. The program was expanded to provide peak reductions of more than 10,000 dekatherms per day with committed reductions in the program increasing by 50% compared to last year, meeting or exceeding the required demand response load reductions for the winter.
  • CNG transfer sites enable National Grid to maintain the integrity of our system and support customers during the coldest days of the year. National Grid has opened three additional portable CNG locations on Long Island to meet customer's energy needs. (CNG is natural gas compressed to less than one percent of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure).

While National Grid has sufficient natural gas supplies for this winter, conserving natural gas is more important than ever, customers can help lower the demand on the system and save on their gas bills. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ways in which customers have used natural gas has changed. Customer patterns are different while overall usage is comparable to last year, many customers are now home all day, which has flattened usage throughout the day.

National Grid offers a variety of conservation tips, energy efficiency incentives and rebates customers can take advantage of to save. In addition, there are billing and payment options to help customers manage monthly energy costs. Conserving natural gas is a great way to save energy and money and supports the company's primary responsibility and commitment to provide customers with safe, reliable gas service this winter.

Managing bills through energy efficiency

National Grid provides a long list of easy-to-implement energy efficiency Ways to Save tips including:

  • Lower your water heater setting to 120°F.
  • Install a programmable thermostat and change the settings according to the weather and your schedule.
  • Keep doors and windows closed while running your heating system to reduce air loss.
  • Clear areas in front of vents from furniture; blocked vents require up to 25 percent more energy to distribute air.

The company's website also offers winter safety tips, including carbon monoxide precautions. In addition, the National Grid Marketplace is a one-stop shop for energy efficient products, and site visitors can learn about rebates on Wi-Fi thermostats, lighting, water saving products, and more.
