• This exhibition consists of different interactive spaces for hands-on experimentation to discover the secrets of two of the energy sources we use most in our homes: gas and electricity.
  • The exhibition will run until 1 November 2017 at the Logroño Science House after having already visiting the Gas Museum and the Light Factory. Ponferrada Energy Museum.

Earlier today in Logroño, the Culture, Commerce and Tourism Councillor of the Logroño City Council, Pilar Montes, the Director of the Gas Museum, Eva Buch, the Director of the Science House, Dolores Fernández, and the Director of Gas Natural Rioja, María Miró, officially opened the exhibition entitled ¿Juegas? Pensamos en Energía (Want to Play? Think About Energy).

The exhibition will be in La Rioja for five months, from today until 1 November in Halls 1 and 2 of the Science House. The exhibition will allow visitors to discover the secrets of gas and electricity as sources of energy through various interactive spaces with educational and fun experiments designed in partnership with famous writer Dani Jiménez. The touring exhibition has already run at the headquarters of the Gas Museum in Sabadell (Barcelona) from 17 June 2015 to 28 May 2016, and at the Light Factory. Ponferrada Energy Museum from 10 February to 2 July 2016.

'With an educational approach, the exhibition lets visitors experience the nature, creation and distribution of these energies which are so vital to everyday life,' explained Gas Museum Director Eva Buch. 'It also considers how energy was created in the past, without modern technology, which tools we currently use to produce energy and bring it to our homes, the economic costs of energy, and the efficiency habits we need to avoid wasting it,' she added.

In turn, Culture Councillor Pilar Montes underlined the importance of familiarising people with something as essential and everyday in our lives as energy in such and an educational and hands-on way. 'It is one of the best exhibitions we've had at the Science House because it exposes aspects of science to all audiences; we learn but also experiment, which is very important for learning in children,' she said.

Interactive modules

The show comprises interactive modules for experimenting with energy, divided into five themed sections: Electrically surprised (on electricity), Gassily attentive (on natural gas), You communicate thanks to energy (on sound), Energy to live (on the thermal energy emitted by our bodies) and The miracle of luminescence (on the phenomenon of phosphorescence).

The experiments include a dark room in which visitors can draw using the light from a lantern; a thermal imaging camera, with which you can see the infra-red radiation given off by the human body and see how we are a heat machine in operation; a pedal-powered car that generates electricity to light some bulbs; and an experiment with tubes of different materials down which a neodymium magnet is dropped in order to see that some fall more slowly than others based on whether the material is more or less conductive.

The exhibition's experiments also include an aquarium with two bulbs -one incandescent and one LED- that, when they are turned on, show that the incandescent heats up slowly because of the small bubbles; a flexible hose that shoots out air to steer a ball and see how natural gas travels from the natural deposits to our homes; a balloon full of air that, when submerged in liquid nitrogen, changes state and occupies much less space; and a Van Der Graff generator to see how electrons order themselves inside a battery.

The Gas Natural Fenosa Foundation

Set up in 1992 by GAS NATURAL FENOSA and with a presence in every country where the company operates, the Gas Natural Fenosa Foundation is tasked with educating, training and informing society, as well as raising awareness about energy and environmental issues, and developing business and academic programmes, such as the First Export Programme. It also develops Social Action programmes both nationally and internationally, by influencing particular initiatives aimed at alleviating energy vulnerability. It promotes initiatives in the cultural sphere, geared both at preserving and disseminating the historical heritage of the gas and electricity sector through the Gas Museum, the Bolarque Museum and the educational activities that it holds throughout Spain, and at educating and stimulating society artistically through the multi-disciplinary space in the Contemporary Art Museum.

The Gas Museum is a cultural centre combining a permanent exhibition with the organisation of temporary exhibitions, conferences, an educational programme for schools, activities for all audiences and film and music seasons.
