2020-12-15

NAVER Cloud started its biggest annual event, NAVER Cloud Summit 2021, which is taking place virtually this year on Dec. 15-16. This year's summit focuses on various developments in the combined applications of artificial intelligence (AI), data and cloud computing for everyday life.

Under the theme "Powering My Business with AI, Data and Cloud," NAVER Cloud Summit presenters are discussing examples of innovations driven by AI, data and cloud technology, which have now become essential for efficient business operations as well as the latest technology trends. Over 8,000 participants signed up to attend the online summit, reflecting the high interest in cloud in the data economy. When the summit's Biz Meeting program, an opportunity offering consultation on cloud adoption, opened registration, all sessions were immediately fully booked, and thus required the program to create additional slots.

Cloud is the key to business growth and accelerating the data economy

During the summit's first keynote speech on Dec. 15, Mr. Han Sang-young, Executive Director at NAVER Cloud Strategy and Planning, spoke about the importance of AI, data and cloud for digital transformation.

Mr. Han shared that monthly cloud traffic increased by 30% in March 2020, just a month after the COVID-19 outbreak - equivalent to the annual growth typically experienced before the pandemic. He also stated that NAVER's cloud business showed tremendous growth due to the surge in demand for cloud solutions, driving digital innovation and the data economy. He mentioned that a small number of game changers have emerged in some industries with new business models that combine data analysis and AI capabilities. This has accelerated the growth of these businesses and their market share, widening the gap between the companies and their competitors.

Mr. Han also mentioned there are three levels of proficiency in cloud adoption: experiencing and grasping the value of the cloud platform (beginner), developing and understanding applications of cloud, and being able to refine and analyze collected data (intermediate), and finally, mastering the use of cloud and precisely understanding AI application (advanced). NAVER Cloud is continuously launching various services models to fit all of these skill levels, in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS), so that customers can fully experience the cloud's potential at each stage.

With the rapid adoption of cloud computing in all industries, NAVER Cloud is targeting the global market by constantly expanding its product portfolio. The company boasts a total of 203 products in 18 categories as of December 2021, achieving an over nine-fold growth since its establishment in 2017, when they had just 22 products in six categories.

Mr. Han also revealed that NAVER Cloud currently has more than 60,000 enterprises and institutions as clients. This strong customer base is the result of continuous, strategic investments in technology that have worked to build a vast product portfolio, including a wide range of online services and digital businesses. NAVER Cloud's capabilities, enhanced through its extensive experience in developing and operating its own services, have also contributed to the growth of the customer base.

By introducing NAVER Cloud's digital transformation initiatives through the firm's AI, data and cloud products, Mr. Han hopes that "this year's summit provides an opportunity to learn more about NAVER Cloud's technology and products, and to get insights on digital transformation," encouraging attendees to participate in the many scheduled sessions.

Future AI transformation strategy with HyperCLOVA

In the subsequent keynote presentation, Mr. Sung Nako, Executive Officer of NAVER CLOVA CIC, shared how the world's first hyperscale Korean language model, HyperCLOVA, can be used in the cloud. He stated, "I recall saying at last year's summit that we will protect Korean AI sovereignty by developing our own hyperscale AI model. It feels so special to be here again just a year later to use that model created on the cloud."

Mr. Sung proclaimed HyperCLOVA as a paradigm-shifting technology for various CLOVA services and underlined that hyperscale AI is the key to protecting Korea's AI sovereignty in a competitive landscape dominated by global tech giants. HyperCLOVA has learned 6,500 times more datasets than Open AI's GPT-3 and was developed using Korea's most powerful AI-dedicated supercomputer infrastructure, and through collaborations with some of the country's leading AI researchers.

The integration of HyperCLOVA with cloud platforms can improve business productivity, especially for customer-directed services. For example, HyperCLOVA can separate and analyze information and sentiment from consumer reviews, providing insights to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on NAVER's ecommerce marketplace. The AI model is also able to automatically adjust product names that are search engine-optimized, by generating alternatives that are will gain more attention from customers. CLOVA CareCall, an AI-powered welfare call solution for senior citizens living alone, can have human-like conversation and even provide emotional support. Furthermore, CLOVA Note, an AI-enabled speech-to-text transcription tool that Google Play selected as "Popular App of the Year", has improved its speech recognition accuracy by over 15% after HyperCLOVA technology was applied to the service. New upgrades will be made to CLOVA Note, such as analyzing the content of conversations to produce more refined sentences and meeting summaries.

NAVER Cloud is now in the final stages of preparing HyperCLOVA for release, which will offer intelligence compiled from the vast amounts of data on NAVER to offer practical solutions to users and startups. This month, NAVER will invite selected partners to experience HyperCLOVA in a closed beta trial using CLOVA Studio - a no-code AI user interface - to advance the company's AI transformation strategy, leading the new paradigm of AI.

NAVER technologies to maximize big data and digital twin utility

On the second day of the summit, Dec. 16, a keynote presentation by Mr. Kim Hong-jin, Executive Director of NAVER Cloud, will dive into the company's future direction on big data as well as NAVER LABS' various technologies that connect digital spaces with the real world.

Mr. Kim will stress that the company has been preparing for rapid digitalization by using the entire NAVER ecosystem as a source of big data, a concept and resource that has become essential to every industry. In addition, efforts to maximize the value derived from NAVER's high-quality data will be discussed in detail. This includes strategies to offer unique solutions that only NAVER Cloud can provide by utilizing its globally competitive, high-performance infrastructure, services and data centers. Through its various product portfolios and collaborations, NAVER Cloud will introduce vertical solutions that each satisfy a unique set of business requirements to develop intelligent infrastructure and services based on its data and technology.

Following Mr. Kim's session, Mr. Kang Sang-chul, Project Manager of NAVER LABS, will talk about ARCVERSE, a metaverse ecosystem that seamlessly integrates emerging digital twin solutions with NAVER's core technologies, such as AI, robotics, cloud and 5G. He will highlight how ARCVERSE is facilitating an innovative future through cloud-based virtual spaces that connect with physical locations, seamlessly linking the two worlds to provide users with an integrated experience.
