A clean and renewable source, wind power has been growing in the last 15 years in Brazil and, currently, it accounts for over 10% of the country's energy matrix. Neoenergia is one of the forerunners in investing in this segment and its first wind farm, Rio do Fogo (RN), was one of the pioneers nationwide, in operation since 2006. In line with its decarbonization strategy, which provides for the neutrality of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the company is expanding its installed capacity.

By 2022, it will have 1.6 GW of power, with 1 GW coming from 27 wind farms under construction at Chafariz (PB) and Oitis (PI and BA) complexes, in addition to 17 already in operation in the Northeast and a portfolio of own projects under development.

The company's investment growth follows the national trend. In 2006, the installed capacity in the country was 230 MW, while in 2021 it is expected to exceed 20 GW, according to the Brazilian Wind Power Association (ABEEólica). In 2020 wind power produced enough energy to supply 28.8 million households per month. By 2024, according to ABEEólica installed capacity will increase by 11 GW, reaching 31 GW, 6 years ahead of the capacity forecast in the Ten-Year Plan of the Energy Research Company (EPE).

'Besides being a competitively priced and reliable source for the National Interconnected System (SIN), the expansion of wind power brings countless environmental benefits, since it does not emit greenhouse gases during generation, and social and economic benefits, by fostering local development for decades, from the installation of the farms to operation', says Thaisa Almeida< Neoenergia's Superintendent of Renewable Business Development.

Globally, Iberdrola, Neoenergia's parent company, is one of the global leaders in renewable energy and a global pioneer in energy transition. The group has been investing for over 20 years in various clean sources, with a focus on onshore and offshore wind power. Currently, it has in its portfolio an installed capacity of 32GW in renewables, and in the first quarter of this year alone, the implementation of additional 4.6 GW in wind energy was started, with 2.6 GW offshore.

To show the importance of wind power, the company tells the story of this energy source in the world:
