Have you ever wondered how the energy produced at hydropower plants located so far away from your house reaches your outlet? From generation to final consumption, there are thousands of kilometers of transmission and distribution lines and substations through which the energy passes. Neoenergia is present in all stages of such path, always investing on the most modern technologies to benefit its customers and the society in all 18 States where it serves, in addition to providing more efficiency to the businesses and contributing to the safety of the Brazilian electrical industry.

Currently, about 65% of the energy generated in Brazil comes from the water of the rivers. It means that most of the energy comes from clean source, which assists the combat to climate changes, since it does not consume the natural resource in the production processes, neither does it emit greenhouse gases. Committed to the preservation of the environment, at Neoenergia, it is not different: 3 GW out of the 4.08 GW of installed capacity are at seven hydropower plants - Itapebi (BA), Corumbá (GO), Baguari (MG), Teles Pires (MT/PA), Dardanelos (MT), Belo Monte (PA) and Baixo Iguaçu (SC/PR).

In addition, the company stands out for the wind energy generation. 17 wind farms are already in operation in the States of Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba, amounting to 515.8 MW. Such capacity will be tripled with the completion of two wind complexes under construction in the Northeastern region, which will cause the company to reach the power of 1.5 GW from wind, sufficient energy to supply 10 million people, equivalent to the population of Portugal.

The energy produced at those and other plants first passes through a transmission substation, at which equipment named transformer increases the voltage. That procedure is performed in order to avoid long distance losses which will be traveled from the production to the consumption spots, which are mostly located in urban centers. In Brazil, the energy production and transmission points reaching the residences are connected through the National Interconnected System (SIN). This is what allows the energy generated in the Northeastern region to reach the Southeastern region, for example.

Neoenergy has a strong market share in the Brazilian transmission market, with enterprises under operation in the States of São Paulo, Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Ceará, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul. Another seven projects are under construction, which will serve, in addition to those States, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Tocantins, Piauí an Maranhão. In the latest auction held by the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel), in December 2020, the company acquired the longest section, with 1,091 kilometers and a new substation.

Despite passing through transmission lines and substations and reaching the cities, the energy passes through another substation, the distribution substation. There, the process is the reverse: reducing the voltage so that it may be delivered to the residential, commercial and industrial spots and it also undergoes another voltage reduction, which is proper to consumption. Neoenergia's four distribution companies - Coelba (BA), Celpe (PE), Cosern (RN) and Elektro (SP/MS) - rely on technologies that cause the service to be provided to its over 14 million customers with quality, efficiency and safety.
