First Home-Grown Coffee Made with 100% Local Coffee Beans

PETALING JAYA, December 1, 2020 - Malaysian coffee lovers have something to look forward to, as Nestlé Malaysia presents its first ever 100% home-grown coffee, NESCAFÉ Classic Kopi Kedah! This first edition is made with 100% locally grown coffee beans from the NESCAFÉ Grown Respectfully Programme, a sustainable coffee farming initiative launched last year in Kedah.

Roasted to perfection and ground to a fine coffee powder, this delivers the signature aroma and taste of NESCAFÉ Classic, bringing Malaysians a truly authentic local coffee experience. Further paying homage to the 100% homegrown product, the all-new NESCAFÉ Classic Kopi Kedah is packaged in a printed traditional Malaysian batik aluminum collectible tin can, bringing to life local elements.

Mr Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, said, 'For many years we have been supporting rural communities in Malaysia. We have been engaged in chili and rice farms across several states and now we are so proud to revitalize the coffee farming in Kedah to deliver our first NESCAFÉ Classic Kopi Kedah! Kopi Kedah delivers the best taste with coffee beans grown on Malaysian soil, with all the love, care and respect for the land and the people. This is one of the many ways how we unlock the power of food to enhance the quality of life for all Malaysians.'

Mr. Othman Chraibi, Business Executive Officer, Beverages Business Unit, showcasing NESCAFÉ Classic Kopi Kedah, made with 100% locally-grown coffee beans from the NESCAFÉ Grown Respectfully Programme.

Mr. Othman Chraibi, Business Executive Officer, Beverages Business Unit, added, 'This is indeed a great start to the NESCAFÉ Grown Respectfully Programme, which to date has seen the participation of more than 100 farmers, planting close to 70,000 plantlets. While this is indeed a significant milestone, this is only the beginning. We will continue to heighten our efforts to cultivate a sustainable coffee future and positively impact the local farming community.'

This will ensure a sustainable future for the coffee farming in Malaysia. The beans must comply to the high-quality standards in line with Nestle's requirements to ensure the delivery of a great tasting beverage production.

Quotes from Kedah farmers in the NESCAFÉ Grown Respectfully Programme

Romlah binti Hamid, aged 64, from Sik, Kedah, said, 'The new coffee seedlings provided by Nestlé are identical to the mother plant. With this, the coffee beans harvested from my farm are expected to increase significantly!'

Che Nai bin Hassan, aged 65, from Sik, Kedah, is thankful to have received training from Nestlé, sharing, 'Through the wedge grafting technique and rejuvenation of old coffee trees method taught by Nestlé, my coffee trees are able to thrive. With increased potential to produce quality fruits, this will provide lucrative income.'

Mazlan bin Isa, aged 52, from Sik, Kedah, said, 'The reciprocal crop system between coffee and cash crops pioneered by Nestlé has helped me generate continuous income throughout the year, alongside receiving my year-end bonus from the coffee production. I am grateful to be a part of this programme.'

The limited-edition NESCAFÉ Classic Kopi Kedah is available in a 170g aluminum tin can, retailing for RM23.02 at selected local supermarkets and mini markets such as MYDIN, Billion, EconSave and 99Speedmart, from December 1 onwards.
