NetApp and Google Cloud's relationship has been strong for several years, and it continues to shape the market by bringing cloud technology to enterprises around the globe.

Today, NetApp is excited to announce our latest collaboration with Google Cloud - the validation of Anthos on bare metal with NetApp. NetApp® ONTAP® data management software and NetApp Trident (which provides storage orchestration for containerized applications), combined with Google Cloud's Anthos bare metal solution, provides customers a deployment option to run Anthos on physical servers, without a hypervisor layer.

'Anthos on bare metal gives customers more choices of environment and greater flexibility in their Anthos deployments,' said Rayn Veerubhotla, director, Partner Engineering at Google Cloud. 'We're delighted that NetApp, a key infrastructure and data storage partner, will support Anthos on bare metal, enabling customers to deploy containerized workloads and applications with Anthos and NetApp across on-premises and hybrid environments.'

The Anthos on bare metal with NetApp solution is qualified by NetApp and Google Cloud. The solution is designed to take advantage of existing on-premises customer compute and storage infrastructure, while fully integrating the power of the Google Cloud.

The main solution components are:

  • Anthos onbare metal. A platform that simplifies deployment, management, and operations for Kubernetes clusters, without the need for the added complexity of additional hypervisors, across the hybrid cloud ecosystem through its enterprise-grade container orchestration and management services.
  • NetApp AFF with ONTAP. Our all-flash storage system designed for highly available, multiprotocol, high-performance workloads.
  • NetApp Trident. Our CSI-compliant, open-source storage orchestrator for Kubernetes, which offers seamless integration with our storage platforms for provisioning and managing persistent storage for containers.
  • Bring your own server. By allowing customers to provide their own server infrastructure, and to choose their own operating system (RHEL, CentOS, or Ubuntu) the solution can be easily deployed in any customer's existing compute infrastructure.

Anthos on bare metal with NetApp opens up the power of Anthos to a customer's data center and edge locations. NetApp Trident can integrate with ONTAP software deployed on premises or in the cloud. This means that Anthos on bare metal can extend the power of Google Cloud into a customer's local or edge data center and create the perfect platform for the growth of a hybrid cloud.

Using Trident to integrate an Anthos bare metal cluster with storage back ends provided by NetApp ONTAP makes the orchestration of persistent storage for applications easier. It also helps to extend additional data protection and efficiency options to container workloads deployed in Kubernetes by using point-in-time NetApp Snapshot™ copies and flexible clones of persistent volumes. By bringing together the power of NetApp ONTAP, Trident, and Anthos bare metal, the Anthos on bare metal with NetApp solution delivers a dedicated cloud experience from NetApp and Google Cloud.
