This month, Newmont marks the one-year anniversary of our US$20 million Global Community Support Fund (the Fund), established to help employees and their families, host communities and governments combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Established early on in the pandemic, Newmont identified three key areas of need through careful and deliberate input from stakeholders. Workforce and community health, food security and local economic resilience have become the Fund's core pillars and when combined with ongoing local engagement and corporate oversight, have assured that funds have reached those people and organizations in greatest need.

'The relationships we have with our workforce, and the communities that host our operations, are fundamental to our success,' shared Stephen Gottesfeld, Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability & External Affairs Officer. 'For us, it was critically important to support our employees and key stakeholders during this global crisis. Our strong relationships with stakeholders were critical to understanding the best way to allocate the Fund and focus our efforts.'

To date, over $11 million has been contributed through the Fund. By working with local governments, medical institutions, charities and non-governmental organizations, we hope to be a catalyst for long-term resiliency and future community development.

From the instillation of an oxygen plant at a regional hospital, to salary support for local contractors during lockdown periods, to critical medical equipment for healthcare facilities, to providing grocery baskets and food staples to families thrust into food insecurity, to support for agencies combating domestic violence, it has been a multi-functional and global effort throughout Newmont to ensure the success of the Fund. 'It has truly been all hands on deck. Our supply chain teams have secured everything from PPE to ambulances. Business Integrity and Compliance developed a governance process to ensure the funds would go to where they were targeted. Our health, safety and security teams have provided critical advice throughout and continue to monitor the COVID-19 case and vaccine trends so that we can plan ahead,' recounted Gottesfeld.

Today, more than half of the funds deployed have been in the workforce and community health pillar. As the pandemic continues into its second year and vaccines have started to become available, Newmont expects to increase its partnership with governments through the Fund to support vaccine rollouts. 'This will be critical for the health and wellbeing of our workforce and host communities. We will also assist in educational efforts around the importance of the vaccine to ensure individual health as well as the health of the communities where we live and work,' said Gottesfeld.

'We are committed to engaging with local and national stakeholders to get through the pandemic as well as catalyze recovery in the post-pandemic context. Just as we have learned things about the nature of work and how we can do things differently in our operations, we are also learning more effective ways to engage and partner with host governments and communities.'
