Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Otsu, Shiga, Japan; President: Motoharu Matsumoto) has concluded a 'Lake Biwa Carbon Credit' partner agreement with General Incorporated Association Shiga Prefecture Afforestation Public Corporation (Director: Taizo Mikazuki (Governor of Shiga Prefecture)). The ceremony was held today at the Shiga Prefectural Office.

The Lake Biwa Carbon Credit is a system in which Shiga Prefecture uses the government's J-Credit Scheme to sell an amount of CO2 emissions reduced through energy saving or utilization of renewable energy or an amount of CO2 absorbed through forest management to business enterprises, etc. as credits. This system aims to contribute to 'Shiga CO2 Net Zero (promotion of net zero carbon emissions in Shiga)' which started this year. Shiga Prefecture Afforestation Public Corporation sells credits, and the money gained through credit trading is used for conservation of the forests that are a water source of Lake Biwa. This will produce the positive cycle of Shiga CO2 Net Zero and environmental conservation of Lake Biwa.
As a manufacturer headquartered in Shiga Prefecture with multiple production bases around Lake Biwa, we have positioned environmental conservation and contribution to local communities as our top priority issues for CSR. The Lake Biwa Carbon Credit is exactly in line with the direction of CSR that we are heading in, and therefore we decided to conclude this agreement.

Since 2018, we have been continuously purchasing J-credits from the Konze Forestry Association in Ritto, Shiga Prefecture, and this is our second case of purchasing J-credits through the Lake Biwa Carbon Credit. We will stably purchase credits produced in the prefecture, and over the medium-to-long term, support forest conservation activities in Shiga, our home prefecture, to contribute to Shiga CO2 Net Zero and environmental conservation of Lake Biwa.

1. Agreement period: April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2026
