Japan Cabinet approves 29.1 tril. yen extra budget for econ package

TOKYO - Japan's Cabinet approved Tuesday an extra budget for the current fiscal year to spend 29.09 trillion yen ($199 billion) on an economic package designed to mitigate the pain on households and businesses of rising prices, exacerbated by a weaker yen.

To secure the necessary funding, the government will issue bonds worth 22.85 trillion yen, putting fiscal restoration on the backburner further despite its debt already being more than twice the size of its economy.

Japan looks to finalize nuclear reactor service extension by year-end

TOKYO - Japan's industry ministry is considering extending the lifespan of nuclear reactors to beyond the current 60 years with ambitions to finalize the plan by the end of the year, in a bid to cut carbon emissions and ensure stable energy supplies threatened by Russia's war in Ukraine, sources familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is looking to extend the number of years nuclear power stations can remain open by considering screening periods, necessary for stricter plant safety operations, as separate from the total service life, which could allow nuclear reactors to operate for longer. During safety checks, the nuclear plants are not operational.

Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors mull investing in Renault's new EV unit

TOKYO - Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. are considering investing in alliance partner Renault SA's new electric vehicle company Ampere, the French automaker said Tuesday.

Renault, which has been reviewing its decades-long capital tie-up with Nissan, unveiled the EV business spinoff as part of its group strategy update.

Uranus to be hidden by eclipsed moon on Tues. in Japan in rare event

TOKYO - Residents of Japan will be able to witness Tuesday night a rare celestial event not seen in 442 years, a total lunar eclipse coinciding with the occultation of Uranus, in which the planet is hidden by the moon.

The cosmic show will start with a partial eclipse, in which part of the moon appears to be missing, at 6:09 p.m., with the total eclipse to be visible from 7:16 p.m. to 8:42 p.m.

Ex-nursery head, staffer found guilty over boy's death in school bus

FUKUOKA - The former head of a nursery school in southwestern Japan and a fellow staff member were found guilty Tuesday for failing to notice that they had left a 5-year-old boy inside a school bus, causing him to die of a heatstroke last year.

The Fukuoka District Court sentenced Yoko Urakami, the 45-year-old head of the nursery school in Nakama, Fukuoka Prefecture, to two years in prison, as well as staff member Noriko Toba, 59, to 18 months in prison, both suspended for three years.

Baseball: Buffaloes manager Nakajima wins Shoriki Award

TOKYO - Japan Series-winning Orix Buffaloes manager Satoshi Nakajima was named the winner of the Matsutaro Shoriki Award on Tuesday over 22-year-old Triple Crown-winning slugger Munetaka Murakami, who received a special award instead.

The Shoriki Award, named after the visionary owner of the Yomiuri Giants who created Japan's first pro league, has been handed by the selection committee to the Japan Series-winning manager since 2001 with only three exceptions.

Nintendo logs record 230 bil. yen net profit in April-Sept. period

TOKYO - Nintendo Co. on Tuesday reported 230.45 billion yen ($1.6 billion) in net profit for the April-September period, up 34.1 percent from a year earlier and a new record for a fiscal first half.

The game and console developer said the weak yen increased its overseas profits.

Japanese man arrested in Indonesia for protesting against G-20 summit

JAKARTA - A Japanese man has been arrested in Indonesia for staging a protest against the Group of 20 summit to be held in the country next week, the immigration office said Tuesday.

The 57-year-old tourist, who entered Indonesia late last month, unfurled a banner on a street in Banyuwangi on Monday before being arrested the same day in violation of the immigration law, the Directorate General of Immigration said, adding that he would be deported immediately.
