Nordex Energy Spain S.A.U. is part of GERA, a joint project of 8 Navarre companies and institutions. The initiative has helped develop the design and integrated control of wind and storage plants, models to simulate these plants and testing control strategies in real settings. These last two operations were led by the Spanish subsidiary of the Nordex Group.

The GERA project is based on an existing facility at the Barásoain experimental farm, owned by our customer Acciona Energía, which has comprises 5 AW3000 wind turbines with AW3000 SGCS (Substation General Control System) and AW3000 SCADA control. Nordex Energy Spain S.A.U. has been involved in the solution for incorporating the battery system into the AW3000 SGCS control. To this end, it has carried out the installation of an SGCS remote measuring cabinet, its communications network within the park network, the communications interface between AW3000 SGCS and the battery EMS control and the AW3000 SCADA interface for battery system control from SGCS. It has also designed, implemented and validated control strategies.

This project has been submitted to the Navarre Government 2018 call for grants for industrial research and experimental development projects of a strategic nature. The goal of these grants is to promote the development of new technologies as well as to encourage the transfer of knowledge between companies and research organisations. Thanks to the joint work of the GERA project partners, the challenge of storing renewable energy to optimize use has been met.
