Norfolk Southern Corp. said Wednesday that its earnings, revenue and total volume fell in the second quarter.

Net income at the railroad operating company decreased 46% from a year prior, to $392 million, or $1.53 a share. A year earlier, the company's profit was $722 million, or $2.70 a share.

Total railway operating revenues were $2.09 billion, down 29% from a year ago. According to FactSet, analyst were expecting $2.08 billion.

The company said total volume fell 26%.
