ACHESON, Alberta (AP) _ North American Construction Group Ltd. (NOA) on Wednesday reported first-quarter profit of $15.3 million.

On a per-share basis, the Acheson, Alberta-based company said it had profit of 49 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to 47 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 40 cents per share.

The heavy construction and mining services company posted revenue of $133 million in the period.

North American Construction shares have climbed 19% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $11.80, more than doubling in the last 12 months.
