Our reporting suite

This is our first stand-alone sustainability report and reflects our commitment to sustainability and increasing stakeholder interest in this area. It complements our annual integrated report 2021 and the other online documents in our reporting suite. This report covers financial year 2021 and presents our sustainability performance and data from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021. This report has been prepared in accordance with the Core requirements of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and the GRI index can be found on page 112.

CEO welcome

Welcome to our new sustainability report for the year ended 30 June 2021. In a departure from last year's reporting suite, we have produced a stand-alone sustainability report this year. This reflects our ongoing commitment to the ESG agenda and growing interest in this area from a wide range of Northam stakeholders.

This report complements our Annual integrated report, providing a more detailed account of our progress and performance in four main areas: health, safety and wellness; our people; our communities; and our environment.

Despite the challenges of COVID-19, which continues to have an impact on our business and society more generally, I am pleased with our continuing progress with sustainability reporting.

I must start my introduction, however, on a low note. Tragically, we suffered two fatalities in separate underground incidents at our Zondereinde mine during March 2021. I wish to express my sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, Mr Motaung and Mr Guambe. We have conducted thorough investigations into these incidents and learnings have been shared throughout the business. These incidents show how we must maintain 100% focus on the safety and health of everyone associated with Northam's operations. Always.
