NorthWestern Energy's balanced resources delivering energy on Montana's coldest day
Date: Feb 23, 2022
Butte, Mont. - Feb. 23, 2022 - Temperatures across Montana ranged from -10 to -36 degrees, with the coldest spot south of the Little Belt Mountains in Meagher County this morning.
Montanans are relying on NorthWestern Energy to keep their homes and businesses operating safely.
"NorthWestern Energy's Montana customers' demand for energy, both gas and electric, is at an all-time peak this morning," said NorthWestern Energy Vice President Transmission Mike Cashell. "Our system is delivering energy reliably. We work all year long to be ready for these extreme conditions. Our crews are prepared to respond immediately to any outages. And our balanced resources are generating energy, although there is almost no wind in Montana today."
Always-available, on-demand resources -NorthWestern Energy's natural gas-fired plants and the Colstrip power plant - are providing energy to keep the lights on for Montana customers this morning. NorthWestern's hydro generation is also contributing energy for customers' needs. Until wind generation picks back up, which is forecast to occur later this week, energy from the market is being purchased to fill in the gap.
Market prices today are ranging from $50 to $100 per megawatt, compared with about $35 to $40 per megawatt Tuesday, Feb. 22.
