Sioux Falls, S.D.- Feb. 18, 2021- NorthWestern Energy thanks the residents of South Dakota and our commercial and industrial customers who answered the call to conserve during this week's energy emergency.

'The first action when energy supply may not be adequate for high demand, which was the situation throughout the Midwest due to extreme cold, is to ask customers to reduce their energy use,' said NorthWestern Energy Community Relations Manager Tom Glanzer. 'From residential customers putting off the laundry to commercial businesses voluntarily adjusting production, you responded to that request. Thanks to your actions, we are getting through this unprecedented energy emergency together safely.'

Reducing demand on the energy grid helped prevent more widespread and uncontrolled power outages in the Midwest.

'We began reaching out to customers after being notified by the Southwest Power Pool, the entity that manages overall grid stability, of the energy emergency and the overwhelming reaction was 'how can we help',' said NorthWestern Energy Key Accounts and Economic Development Specialist Paul Mantz.

The energy emergency situation was changing quickly and customers remained patient.

'NorthWestern Energy is proud to be a member of the communities we serve in South Dakota, where we provide safe, reliable and affordable energy,' said NorthWestern Energy Director of Community Connections Rick Edwards. 'We appreciate the cooperation of our neighbors, the people who make this is a great place to live and work.'

South Dakota customers are asked to continue to conserve energy use, especially during the peak demand times of 6 to 8 a.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.
