NOS AND LUZ SAÚDE PRESENT THE

FIRST 5G HOSPITAL IN PORTUGAL

  • Coverage of the Hospital da Luz Lisbon with the NOS 5G network will drive technological advances in health care and medical research
  • Virtual and augmented reality, sensorization, monitoring and robotics are examples of some of the applications of the new technology in the health sector
  • NOS is testing the 5G network in the Hospital da Luz Lisbon and is giving demonstrations for medical education and hospital training

NOS and Luz Saúde today presented the first 5G Hospital in Portugal. By equipping the Hospital da Luz Lisbon with a 5G network, NOS strengthens its leadership on the path towards the fifth generation of mobile communications in Portugal, demonstrating the innovation potential from this new technology in one of the most pivotal sectors of society: Health.

The pioneering partnership between the Luz Saúde Group and NOS will drive technological advances in health care and medical research, allowing doctors, nurses, care technicians as well as the entire support structure of the Hospital da Luz Lisbon to be the first to take advantage of what the new mobile technology can offer.

In a first phase, the impact of 5G will be felt in the training and education of health professionals and students at the Hospital da Luz Lisbon through the use of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality applications, to create new virtual scenarios and environments for training, diagnostics and treatment. The same technologies will be used in hospital palliative care, as a complement to customary therapies, whether for relief and comfort or for sensory stimulation. NOS' 5G will also enable greater agility in the operational and technical working of the Hospital da Luz Lisbon, optimizing costs and time, and improving the services provided.

NOS is already working on new 5G applications for the health sector, which will soon be installed in the Hospital da Luz Lisbon, in particular making use of sensorization for monitoring patients being cared for at home, and the development of remote healthcare, for distance medical help and treatment.

The project to provide coverage designed by is based on a system of 5G antennas which will cover the core areas of the Hospital da Luz Lisbon, such as external consultations, operating theatres, the training center and auditorium. For those areas with a greater flow of patients and their guests, dedicated cells will be installed, which ensure greater capacity and reach by the network.

NOS AND LUZ SAÚDE PRESENT THE FIRST 5G HOSPITAL

IN PORTUGAL

According to Manuel Ramalho Eanes, Executive Board Director of NOS, "this is a milestone for healthcare in Portugal and for NOS, as a company that aspires to leadership in the delivery of 5G, creating more value for people, for companies and the country. Today, thanks to NOS' 5G network, the Hospital da Luz Lisbon is an institution ready for the future, meeting the necessary conditions to position itself at the forefront of this technological revolution".

Isabel Vaz, CEO of Luz Health, says: "Luz Saúde's partnership with NOS will enable us to initiate a new cycle of innovation in providing health care in Portugal. It will also allow us to shape future generations of health care workers, in particular doctors, nurses and technicians. Finally, it will take hospital care to people's homes in a clinically secure manner while at the same time safeguarding the patient's privacy".

Advanced medical training using 5G

Through the presentation of the first 5G hospital in Portugal, NOS has demonstrated the disruptive potential of 5G technology with Virtual and Augmented Reality applications for medical education and hospital training, in what is the biggest center of medical simulation in the country and which will soon begin to welcome students for the first course of study for medicine from a private higher education institution in Portugal.

At the demonstration of Virtual Reality, it was possible to understand the potential of 5G in the context of remote medical education. A robot equipped with a 360º camera collected images in real time from the Hospital da Luz Learning Health training center, instantly transmitting them to the VR goggles of astudent who was not physically present at the center. This use case makes an immersive and real experience possible, opening the door to a more specialized training which can be done in a totally remote manner. It can also be applied in the provision of distance healthcare, offering the possibility of making remote surgery commonplace, thanks to the low latency permitted by 5G.

The second demonstration of Augmented Reality was an opportunity to test remote support for amedical intervention. In this simulation, the doctor, using Hololens - Augmented Reality goggles - received a diagnosis from a specialist who was a long way from the location. This remote assistance in real time, with precise visualization of where to act, is only possible thanks to the ultra-rapid speeds allowed by 5G, this being the basis to ensure access to the best specialists and best technicians from any location.

The first step to the Hospital of the Future

Almost total network resilience, more interconnected objects, reduced response time, high velocity and high band width to access data in real time, are some of the unique features of 5G which will be seen to be crucial to create the hospitals of the future.

Data transmission at high speed and instantaneous access to information will allow faster diagnostics and so better hospital management, optimizing costs and time and significantly improving the agility of t he health eco-system.

NOS AND LUZ SAÚDE PRESENT THE FIRST 5G HOSPITAL

IN PORTUGAL

Massive sensorization and the monitoring of innumerable clinical parameters are also decisive in continuous medical follow up, making possible remote specialist support which will increase the ability to prevent illness.

Immersive reality, backed up by virtual and augmented reality technologies, will create new virtual scenarios and environments for training, diagnostics and treatment. Gradually, it will also be possible to move to medical robotics.

The massive quantity of data generated and the number of interconnected devices will mean the use in real time of support tools to take clinical decisions, based on artifical intelligence technologies.

The technological evolution of equipment, together with the speed of data tr ansmission will allow preventive monitoring of patients outside hospitals and care centers and increase the use of "wearable" devices, which will facilitate the independence and autonomy of personal health care.

NOS takes on the role of one of the main enablers of the digitization of society. With the goal of leading the technological revolution that 5G has brought, it has been working to develop its network and build partnerships that will allow the potential of technology to be exploited. This pioneering partnership with the Luz Health Group is yet another step in this strategy of leadership.
