TOKYO - June 10, 2022 - NTT DATA, a global digital business and IT services leader, today announces the establishment of the non-profit organization Estainium Association, together with 14 affiliated companies, organizations, and academic institutions. This new association aims to serve as a cross-industry hub for companies, organizations, and academic institutions, providing an open foundation for securely sharing carbon emissions data (product carbon footprint data) among all companies in a supply chain, and supporting industrial decarbonization.
Through the activities of this association, NTT DATA will build relationships across industries, as well as support the establishment of rules for carbon tracing globally, and the development of decarbonization solutions.

Background

NTT DATA has formulated the "NTT DATA Carbon-neutral Vision 2050" and is making a concerted effort as a corporate group to achieve carbon neutrality by 20501. In promoting Green Innovation, through the use of digital technologies and co-creation with customers, NTT DATA aims to contribute to achieve carbon neutrality and strengthen response to climate change of the company as well as society in general.
As part of its efforts to further promote Green Innovation, on April 19, 2022, NTT DATA established the non-profit organization Estainium Association together with 14 affiliated companies, organizations, and academic institutions2. Specifically, these 14 affiliated companies, organizations, and academic institutions are: SIEMENS, Merck, Weidmüller, WTS Global, ATS Automation Tooling Systems, TÜV SÜD, Bison Forest, CircularTree GmbH, ecobrain AG, Faber-Castell, Ferdinand-Steinbeis-Institut (FSTI), Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Sustainaccount, and the University of Technology Sydney.

Objectives

Estainium Association aims to build an open foundation that allows emissions data to be securely shared among companies across supply chains, and promote decarbonization mainly in industry.
To achieve carbon neutrality, companies need to ascertain their emissions volume of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. The collection and analysis of such non-financial data as carbon emissions has conventionally been done by hand, leading to numerous problems in terms of sample size, consistency, and verification.
Estainium Association aims to establish a foundation to resolve these issues, while also permitting third-party verification of the emissions data on the platform, as well as carbon offsets3.
The companies, organizations, and academic institutions that established the association together with NTT DATA are those that, from a global perspective, are taking the lead in measures relating to decarbonization, especially in Europe. NTT DATA aims to accelerate decarbonization measures globally, and promote its worldwide Green Innovation activities.

Primary Activities

The Estainium Association conducts activities through the following three working groups.

Working Group Name Role
1 Technology and Infrastructure Exchange PCF and further ESG data along the supply chain requires interoperability by common technology and infrastructure defined by the working group.
2 Standards and Norms Establish meta-standards, handbooks and exchange formats on ESG data.
3 Carbon Capture, Use, Storage & Compensation Execute various activities related to CCUS4.

NTT DATA will participate in all three of these working groups and contribute to the industrial decarbonization. In addition, through the activities of the Estainium Association, NTT DATA will collect information on global advanced researches and the latest policy and regulatory trends, in order to promote the creation of rules for carbon tracing in Japan and other areas of Asia, and accelerate the development of actual services.

Future Goals

NTT DATA, through the activities of the Estainium Association, in addition to building a cross-industry network, will work to create rules for the carbon tracing field globally, and further the development of decarbonization solutions. Through the association activities, as well as related activities such as realizing a data-sharing eco-system able to protect data sovereignty, NTT DATA will enhance the company's presence in achieving carbon neutrality for all of society, and achieve the carbon neutral targets in the NTT DATA Carbon-neutral Vision 2050.

NTT Green Innovation toward 2040

NTT Group announced its environmental vision "NTT Green Innovation toward 2040" on September 28, 2021, setting goals for an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (compared to FY2013), and carbon neutrality in the mobile and data centers businesses, by FY2030, and to achieve full carbon neutrality by FY2040. NTT Group is expanding its initiatives for carbon neutrality to society at large, supporting the Japanese government's target of a 46% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (compared to FY2013 levels) by FY2030, and carbon neutrality by 2050.
