BURLINGTON, Mass. (AP) _ Nuance Communications Inc. (NUAN) on Monday reported fiscal first-quarter net income of $14.9 million.

The Burlington, Massachusetts-based company said it had profit of 5 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 20 cents per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 18 cents per share.

The voice and language technology company posted revenue of $345.8 million in the period, also surpassing Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $338.7 million.

Nuance Communications shares have climbed 15% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $50.51, more than doubling in the last 12 months.
