SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) _ Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) on Wednesday reported fiscal second-quarter profit of $622 million.

The Santa Clara, California-based company said it had profit of 99 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and stock option expense, were $2.18 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 11 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.94 per share.

The maker of graphics chips for gaming and artificial intelligence posted revenue of $3.87 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Nine analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $3.65 billion.

Nvidia shares have more than doubled since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen 4.5%. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $485.54, nearly tripling in the last 12 months.
