Boxed wine. Paper 'bottles.' They're among the recent fad food and beverage packaging that are marketed as the future of sustainable packaging. The claims, though, are based on one issue - that their weight alone is what makes them 'sustainable.'

But sustainability is not a one-issue, one-variable, linear measurement or characteristic. That's the message O-I Glass, Inc. sends in its piece published in the 2021 Future of Packaging Report from Raconteur. The annual publication reaches players in the food and beverage industry O-I has proudly served for more than a century.

'We need to be sure brands and consumers see through the rhetoric of linear, one-issue claims of sustainability,' says Randy Burns, O-I's Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer. 'Sustainability is about balance and circularity and not comparisons on single issues.'

Glass has always been, and always will be, the kindest packaging option for a sustainable future for the planet and its people. Read the O-I piece, 'Sustainability is about more than weight-It's time to take a holistic view,' and more, in the 2021 Future of Packaging Report.
