Update on COVID-19 Response in PNG

22 March 2021

Oil Search's operations in Papua New Guinea remain protected by strict quarantine measures, activity controls and staff roster protocols that were implemented last year. To date we have not had any COVID-19 cases reported in our field operations. However, in response to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in PNG, Oil Search has further strengthened efforts to protect its people and maintain safe and reliable operations in its operated fields.

  • We enacted our crisis and emergency management plans with teams in PNG and Sydney actively managing and monitoring the situation.

  • Our PNG field locations continue to operate under precautionary protocols established in 2020, which includes redeployment of non-essential personnel, restriction of access and travel to field locations and implementation of strict preventative measures and quarantine zones.

  • We enacted additional risk mitigation measures including acquiring additional testing equipment and extending the quarantine period for employees and contractors going to the field.

  • We have reduced staffing in our Port Moresby office to a core team of medical, security and facilities personnel with daily testing conducted on employees in the office.

In addition, Oil Search has offered assistance to help government authorities stop the further spread of COVID-19 in the country.

  • We have supported the PNG Government through the procurement and delivery of nearly 500,000 items of personal protective equipment. Additionally, we are providing testing capability from our remote medical clinics.

  • We have reached out to the Australian Government to offer assistance with any programs planned by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or other aid agencies.

  • We have joined a coordinated effort with other companies operating in PNG to work together with the PNG Government, donors and communities to assist in disseminating information and providing logistical support for the vaccine rollout.

Commenting on Oil Search's response, Dr Keiran Wulff, Managing Director, said:

"COVID-19 is a growing threat to the people of Papua New Guinea. We are doing everything possible to ensure that our employees can continue to work safely, and to support their families as they do so.

"We also stand ready to assist the PNG and Australian Governments in any public health efforts to roll out the vaccine, through our Oil Search Foundation."
