Opera : Meet Apex Football, a fully redesigned version of the Opera Football app

We know that Opera users in Africa love football. We see the evidence of that in Opera Mini website statistics and spikes in usage during key football events. However, we are aware that from a technology perspective, legacy football-focused products do not cater particularly well to the African market with its unique device, data and connectivity requirements.

Apex Football is here to solve that problem. It's a new version of the vertically focused news site Opera Football, with the best international and local sports content. It was created to provide a better solution for the millions of passionate football fans across Africa. Launched in April 2021, Opera Football has shown impressive growth, with over 10 million users as of the end of Q2 2021, making it one of the leading sports websites in Africa. Opera created the app version in June 2021 to provide a better solution for Africa-based football fans, while remaining relevant to users around the globe. Since launch, our dedicated app rapidly grew to more than a million users.

However, some users were still not well-served when it came to the ability to check the latest football scores and news - specifically those on feature phones, as these users are often overlooked in the rush to create native applications. And that got us thinking: how do we better address this gap in the market? Apex Football is our way of going even further than Opera Football, building a product that updates football fans in the fastest possible time, no matter what device they are using.

We're fortunate at Opera to have the tools in place to get a football app up and running quickly. Apex Football has been optimized for three key technology groups: feature phone and Opera Mini Extreme Mode users; other mobile browser and desktop users; and native app users. Apex Football offers live scores, fresh game statistics and the fastest football updates to all three of these groups. Not only were we able to build upon the success of our Opera News product, integrating the biggest football news stories into one app at incredible speed, but we were also able to make the most of Opera News' existing football live score service.
