VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Orchid Island Capital Inc. (ORC) on Thursday reported a loss of $29.4 million in its first quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Vero Beach, Florida-based company said it had a loss of 34 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 26 cents per share.

Orchid Island shares have increased slightly more than 4% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $5.45, an increase of 33% in the last 12 months.
