Novatek said Thursday that it has signed an environmental monitoring cooperation agreement with the government of the Kamchatka Territory and Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources.

The Russian oil-and-gas company said that under the terms of the agreement, the three parties intend to develop and implement a scientific program to study the water area adjacent to the Kamchatka Peninsula--Russia's easternmost territory--to minimize any negative effects from commercial operations.

"The agreement provides for creating an environmental monitoring system including observations and laboratory tests of environmental components in order to prevent and minimize environmental threats," the company said.
