HOUSTON (AP) _ Patterson-UTI Energy Inc. (PTEN) on Thursday reported a loss of $106.5 million in its fourth quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Houston-based company said it had a loss of 57 cents.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 62 cents per share.

The provider of onshore contract drilling services posted revenue of $220.8 million in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $219.6 million.

For the year, the company reported that its loss widened to $803.7 million, or $4.27 per share. Revenue was reported as $1.12 billion.

Patterson-UTI shares have risen 27% since the beginning of the year. The stock has declined 16% in the last 12 months.
