Petco Health and Wellness Company Inc. is testing a concept aimed at the health and wellness need of pets and farm animals called Neighborhood Farm & Pet Supply.

The pet care centers, aimed at small town and rural areas, offer products, pet care services for house pets as well as horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats and more, according to a press release. The first center opened this month in Floresville, Texas.

"These are rapidly-growing markets where pet parents are looking for an experienced, pet-dedicated partner like Petco to help them care for the health and wellness of their animals," Petco CEO Ron Coughlin said in the release. "This is an exciting opportunity for us to serve more pets by dramatically expanding local access to healthy pet products and services."

The small town and rural market is estimated to be $7 billion, according to the release.

If successful the test concept could lead to a handful of such centers this year.

Each location will offer local events and an in-store community board to support safe, pet-friendly interaction among neighbors. In partnership with Petco Love (formerly Petco Foundation), the neighborhood farm and pet supply locations will offer adoption services and other health and wellness programs to further support local pets.
