SÃO PAULO--Brazil's state-run oil firm Petróleo Brasileiro SA, or Petrobras, said Tuesday it plans to resume production at its Bahia Terra fields by April after Brazilian authorities halted operations there in December over safety concerns.

Brazil's National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency, or ANP, shut down 38 facilities in the area, including 28 onshore production fields, in December.

Petrobras Chief Executive Officer Jean Paul Prates told local authorities on Monday that the company is taking the necessary measures to start up production activities at the fields again.

The company is in the process of selling off a series of assets, including many onshore fields, with the Bahia Terra complex among them. Brazil's new president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has called for ending the sale of state-controlled assets.
