Gartner: Hyperautomation is Irreversible and Inevitable

05/19/2021 EDT

Business Automation replaces more and more manual processes with smart, rules-driven systems. Among the benefits are greater productivity or increased efficiency.

According to Gartner, this is but a start. In their Top Strategic Tech Trends for 2021, the global research and advisory firm predicts that if a process can be automated, it eventually will be - creating a state of hyperautomation.

As we've mentioned in our previous article on this topic, automation is the use of technology to perform tasks - often repetitive and boresome - that originally required human intervention. Not every business process is a great candidate for automation; however, robots are skilled at a wide spectrum of business activities and can help greatly in everyday operation within a company.

So, in this article, we're going to explore how the idea of hyperautomation fits into this.

What is Hyperautomation?

Interestingly, the term itself hasn't been around in common use before being recognized by Gartner. However, it gained huge traction since appearing in both the 2020 and 2021 Top Strategic Tech Trends reports.

Citing Gartner, 'hyperautomation is a process in which businesses automate as many business and IT processes as possible using tools like AI, machine learning, event-driven software, robotic process automation, and other types of decision process and task automation tools'.

So, this uber-automation connects the right technologies to automate, simplify, discover, measure, and manage workflows and processes across the enterprise. By bringing them together, the ability to automate work is amplified.

What's the Difference Between Hyperautomation and 'Normal' Automation?

As the prefix suggests, hyperautomation means more than plain automation. Its main advantage lies in a more sophisticated decision-making potential.

As Gartner stated in one of their articles on this topic, no single tool can replace people in the workplace. That's why hyperautomation - a mixture of many tools - can be an answer to this challenge.

So, while Robotic Process Automation is good at performing certain (single) tasks - for example, mundane and repetitive trivialities - hyperautomation adds a layer of cognitivity. This extra intelligence is possible thanks to the mentioned additional combination of multiple machine learning solutions and packaged software, including:

  • Robot Process Automation. It empowers robots to perform repetitive, structured tasks.
  • Artificial Intelligence. It enables machines to make decisions and solve problems by emulating human logic.
  • Machine Learning. Through algorithms, ML teaches computers to perform complex tasks by themselves.
  • Big Data. With a vast pool of data, it's possible to identify patterns.
  • Short for collaborative robots, they share tasks with people, revolutionizing production processes.
  • Enabling to have a real-time conversation with people.

As a result, hyperautomation can become proficient in more complex activities. For example, BugRaptors gives lists the following use cases:

  • understanding emails through Natural Language Processing,
  • improving automation flows using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence,
  • understanding documents with Optical Character Recognition,
  • stock forecasting with automated restocking.
What are the Benefits of Hyperautomation?

Hyperautomation delivers a similar catalogue of benefits when compared to 'normal' automation. However, the potential of all of these perks is multiplied.

Thanks to a combination of various technologies, your enterprise will be able to operate more quickly and efficiently. Hyperautomation also boosts employee satisfaction even more, keeping team members away from tedious and boresome tasks.

Moreover, with hyperautomation, companies will get the chance to reduce operating costs; according to Gartner's estimation, enterprises can achieve a 30% cost reduction by 2024.

Invest in Robot Process Automation

It's important to remember that Gartner calls hyperautomation inevitable. Ignoring it, in the long run, may result in falling behind the competition.

So, if you haven't already, think about making the first step - looking into Robot Process Automation.

Good luck!
