Sberbank and Fortum have signed a cooperation agreement on the use of green energy Fortum and its joint ventures produce to power Sber facilities in Samara Region. The parties will also explore the option of co-implementing other projects geared toward carbon footprint reduction in different ways, including the mechanism of green certificates.

This is the third stage of the Sber-Fortum decarbonization cooperation. In late 2020, a JV between Fortum and RDIF began green energy supplies to a Sber branch in Ulyanovsk, while in July 2021 the same was done in Nizhny Novgorod.

Fortum owns the biggest wind energy portfolio in Russia, either directly or via JVs. The portfolio exceeds 2 GW.

Sber has a goal to go 100% carbon neutral in its operations by 2030. The migration of our branches to renewable energy sources is a vital instrument in the attainment of this goal. Twenty-seven of the bank's facilities are currently 100% green, and their number is set to increase soon. Our partnership with Fortum will be a contributor to that. Moreover, some of our branches in Astrakhan Region, Kalmykia, and Dagestan have solar panels installed to meet some of their power needs.

Alexander Vedyakhin

First Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, Sberbank

Expanding cooperation with Sberbank on decarbonization projects demonstrates how seriously Russia's top companies take the need to reduce their environmental impact and migrate to carbon-free energy sources. The bank is already one of the main consumers of energy our wind farms produce. We are pleased that our renewable energy facilities help market leaders pursue their sustainable development strategies and look forward to other cooperation tracks.

Alexander Chuvaev

Executive Vice President, Russia Division, Fortum

Samara Region Governor Dmitry Azarov highlighted the importance of the agreement, saying Samara Region is densely populated and experiences high anthropogenic load, which is why it especially needs to adopt green technology.
