WARSAW, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Poland's demand for gas surged to a record high due to freezing temperatures, the country's dominant gas company, PGNiG, said on Tuesday.

State-run PGNiG estimated that in the past 24 hours it delivered around 81 million cubic metres of gas, a daily delivery record. The previous record of 78.8 million cubic metres was reported in the winter of 2018, the company said.

Poland imports most of the gas it uses from Russia via pipelines, although it has reduced that reliance in the past few years and PGNiG is also buying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar and the United States. PGNiG said it has also been using gas from underground storage in Poland and Ukraine.

Earlier this week Poland also reported record high demand for electricity.

The cold snap has eased on Tuesday afternoon, but on Sunday and Monday the temperature in some regions of Poland was minus 20 Celsius.
